Both/& Pairings – Generous Space Retreat 2017

Generous Space Retreats are highlighted with many moments of resonance as we share our stories with one another. There’s something precious about that ‘aha’ moment when you hear another lgbtq+ person share a question, a fear, a doubt, or an experience that you are intimately acquainted with – it makes you feel less alone. At the 2017 Ontario Generous Space Retreat we intentionally created spaces where both affinities and differences could be shared, discovered, and celebrated.

Previous blog posts have invited you into the trans, POC, and non-monosexual panels that were held at this year’s retreat – these panels invited our community to learn to love one another better by listening to the experiences of folks who face stigma and marginalization even within our own community. The differences in some of these stories remind us to reflect on the ways that we are sometimes culpable in unintentionally reinforcing barriers to other people’s flourishing.

Our continuous pursuit of humility, hospitality, mutuality, and justice means that we receive each person’s story as an opportunity to learn how to more fully realize and affirm the belonging of the person in front of us. Nowhere is generous space more evident than in the relationships across difference that have grown and flourished amongst us.

We hoped to highlight and learn from some of these relationships within our community by inviting pairings to have a conversation before our very eyes about how they’ve learned from and learned to love one another well.

Kathy and Maxx are beloved members of the GS community and courageously shared part of their relationship with us this year. We hope their conversation is a blessing and challenge to you as you cultivate and nourish your own relationships across difference.

We were so grateful to these pairs, (and the ones that weren’t recorded) for blessing us with their vulnerable stories as we learn how to grow into holding generous space in our relationships with one another.
