Intersectionality & the Incarnation

Two years ago, I sat down with the community at St. Stephen University (SSU) to share about our journey as a Generous Space community. They filmed it and I recently re-discovered it. I thought I’d share it here on the blog for a few reasons:

  1. It gives a good sense of GS’s journey into understanding intersectional justice and matters of privilege.

  2. If you’re new to the community, this could be a good way to see how we got to that point and compare it with where we are now.

  3. If you’ve been in the community a long time, this could be a good way to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are now, and lean in to where we are headed.

The video is quite long – but can be broken down into three basic sections:

  1. First part – I describe intersectionality and how the GS community has been seeking to embrace it.

  2. Second part – I invite the audience to respond to 50 questions about privilege. It is a bit tedious on the video – but you can either fast forward or take the time to reflect on the questions for yourself if the concept of privilege is a new one for you.

  3. Third part – I respond to some questions from the audience. There is some interesting stuff there – but again – you can easily fast forward through it.

Whether you watch a part or the whole, I’d love to hear your feedback:

  1. What progress have you seen the GS community make in pressing in to better understand, advocate for, and embody intersectional justice?

  2. What areas would you identify as needing more attention and intention?

The Generous Space community is not a perfect community – but I think we are a brave community. We have taken steps to cultivate a space together where our focus is loving across difference in the absolute conviction that we are all Beloved and we all Belong! We want to keep asking, “Whose voices are missing?” and continue to ensure that, “everyone in our community is empowered to make a difference.” As we keep doing this work together, we will become attuned to the “barriers that are preventing our flourishing” and better understand how to “dismantle them” together.
