Juliet Takes a Breath

Juliet Takes a Breath

Gabby Rivera

Juliet is one of my all-time favourite queer characters in fiction. After coming out to her Puerto Rican family, Juliet embarks on adventure away from her home in the Bronx to intern with her favourite lesbian and feminist author, Harlowe Brisbane, in Portland. Juliet comes face-to-face with the humanity of her mentor, the challenges of long-distance communication, and the intersections between gender, sexuality, race and culture.

It’s so great to have a book that reflects the reality of queer women of colour in different urban settings, names some of those challenges, and goes on to tell a beautiful coming-of-age story. We would highly recommend this book to all youth and young adults, but especially those looking for feminist stories with queer protagonists of colour.
