Listen in: Kent & Gabby, long-distance LGBTQ+ Christian Friends

Generous Space Retreats include moments of resonance as we share our stories with one another. There’s something incredible about that ‘aha’ moment when you hear another person share a question, a fear, a doubt, or an experience that you are intimately acquainted with – it makes you feel less alone. At the 2017 West Coast Generous Space Retreat, we hosted three “Fly on the Wall Conversations,” chances to listen in on conversations between two people who were very different from one another, but who loved and appreciated each other. (Read more about last year’s West Coast Retreat here!)

Our continuous pursuit of humility, hospitality, mutuality, and justice means that we receive each person’s story as an opportunity to learn how to more fully realize and affirm the belonging of the person in front of us. Nowhere is generous space more evident than in the friendships across difference that have grown and flourished among us.

Kent and Gabrielle (Gabby) are two members of the Generous Space community who travel long distances to attend both our Ontario and our West Coast retreats (Kent travels from Saskatchewan and Gabby from Wisconsin). In this conversation, they explain why they go to such great efforts to participate in GS events, and they discuss the unlikely friendship they’ve built with one another. They also touch on mental health, addiction, feeling like an imposter in church, isolation, gender expression, women’s football, finding rural allies, dating at 30, heartbreak,  and, believe it or not… the joy of helping cows give birth!

We hope their conversation is a blessing and challenge to you as you cultivate and nourish your own relationships across difference.

NOTE: Some of the conversation is difficult to hear – we highly recommend turning on the captions!
