Hi, I’m Sundeep Singh Boparai, known as Sunny. I hail from Queens, New York. Let me share with you my story, a tale of resilience, self-discovery, and the pursuit of empowerment.
I vividly recall a pivotal moment during my senior year in undergrad. Amidst the chaos of finals, my mom, bustling around the kitchen, casually broached the topic of my future wedding. Little did she know, her innocent words would unravel a truth I had long kept hidden. In a moment of courage, I uttered the words, “Mom, I’m gay.”
Time seemed to stand still as her tears flowed, freezing the air with uncertainty. Supported by my brother, I sought solace elsewhere, grappling with the weight of my revelation.
Despite the initial shock, my mom’s unwavering love and acceptance illuminated a path forward. Her profound acceptance, rooted in our Sikh faith, instilled in me a sense of belonging and self-worth. Inspired by her compassion, I embarked on a journey of self-realization and advocacy.
Driven by a passion for healthcare and social justice, I pursued a Master’s in Healthcare Administration at Hofstra University. Joined by the mission to create visibility and awareness for LGBTQ+ Sikhs, I leveraged social media as a catalyst for change.
Collaborating with a friend, we initiated a platform that celebrated authenticity and sparked meaningful dialogue, despite facing backlash and prejudice.
Fuelled by a desire to enact tangible change, I immersed myself in grassroots activism. At Northwell Health, I spearheaded initiatives within the HIV and transgender healthcare sectors, amplifying marginalized voices and fostering inclusive spaces. Amidst the challenges of COVID-19, I navigated the complexities of healthcare administration with resilience and determination.
Undeterred by obstacles, I embarked on a journey of academic pursuit, currently pursuing a Doctorate at the Medical University of South Carolina. Alongside esteemed leaders such as Admiral Rachel Levine, I advocate for gender diversity and inclusivity, driven by a vision of a more equitable society.
As I approach the culmination of my academic journey, my fundamental goal remains unwavering: to ensure that no individual endure the isolation and adversity I once faced.
Through activism, education, and advocacy, I strive to empower future generations to embrace their identity with pride and resilience.
My story is a testament to the transformative power of self-acceptance and community support. It is a reminder that amidst life’s challenges, our voices hold the power to ignite change and inspire others to embrace their truth.
